Learning with Numicon
Numicon is a multi-sensory approach to teaching maths developed by experts in the classroom. It is designed to help children understand connections between abstract number and calculations. The Numicon teaching materials are designed to give structured, concrete imagery to represent numbers and number relations. It is a multi-sensory approach teaching children to learn mathematical ideas and language through seeing, feeling and hearing.

Every day before our focus maths session, we will have a short 10 to 20 minute ‘CLIC’ session.
We will count, practice our termly learn-it’s, look at ‘it’s
nothing new’ sums (2+1 is the same as 1+2) and look at formal ways of
calculating sums i.e. 1+2=3.
‘Big Maths’ ensures that every child becomes more numerate and it’s a consistent way that your child learns and is taught maths throughout school.
The advantages are – we know what each child can do; we use this knowledge to ensure your child receives the next step of learning; and we constantly assess whether your child is ready to move on.
Learn Its
The basic premise of the ’Learn Its’ is that there are only 72 actual facts
children need to learn and recall, everything else they use is based on this
knowledge, and how they apply it. For example – once a child knows that
1+1=2, then they can begin to understand that 1 ten + 1 ten = 2 tens. In
addition, learning the inverse at the same time cements that knowledge in
place.
During the year, the children focus on particular Learn Its or number facts
each term. This ensures that as your child moves throughout the school, they
are becoming more numerate. Reception Class Learn Its for the year are:-
Term one 1+1=2, 2+2=4 Starting to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
Term two 3+3=6, 4+4=8, 5+5=10 Starting to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
Term three 2+1=3, 2+3=5 Starting to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
